#10

I forgot #10

10) Recycle! When you buy a beverage from a retailer you pay CRV which is California Redemption Value. I think thats an annoying tiny fee you have to pay. To get this fee back just gather all your cans and bottles and take it to the recycling center and get your money back. You'll be doing our planet a favor by doing that too. I usually take mine every 2 months or so on those lazy Sunday afternoons when I goto the local grocery store. I then put this money in my savings. :)

EBATES.COM

Hot Diggity DAMN! I just found another website that actually gives you cashback when you purchase stuff online. I think this might be better than the other post about the mypoints.com because you actually get cash back. Its another for me to save money when I buy things. I'm telling you, every little bit counts. This is like the best timing ever because I'm looking to buy a digital camera, and some other things that I need for the house. Visit WWW.EBATES.COM and use my e-mail when it askes who referred you. It tracks all the "ebates" you get and cuts you a check every quarter. I'll let you know how it goes. All i gotta say is why pay full price on anything!?!?! YeeeeeY!

Money Saving Tips I've accumulated and I'm practicing

1) If you're a beginner saver like me put at least 10%-15% of income in your savings. My manager says I should save 30% but I'll get there.

2) Use CFL (compact flourescent) bulbs to save on electricity. Only 50% of my house is using these but I'm going to switch the others when they burn out. Turn off any lights or whatever that you're not using.

3) Any loose change that I find around the house, car or office I put into my savings.

4) BUDGET! This had an immediate effect on my bank account because everything has a limit. I track mine at wellsfargobank.com where they can track your spending. But a simple spreadsheet is good enough.

5) By tracking income/expenses every month you can gauge how well your doing when it comes to different spending categories.

6) WALMART!! I used to shop at Ralph's for groceries because its right around the corner but everything in WALMART is inexpensive compared to other places. When you're working and still in school WALMART kicks ass.

7) PACK YOUR LUNCH. This also had an immediate effect on my finances. I used to eat
at the local spots near work but I realized what a RIP it is. Instead of spending $7-$10 for lunch, I cook Pasta, or make a sandwhich the night before. I used to buy chips at the convenience store in the building but now I just keep a box of Cheez-Its in my desk for snacks.

8) EAT IN! This kind of goes with #7. I used to always just eat out for dinner but buying groceries and trying to save money has forced me to cook.

9) If you have points or rewards on your credit card use the card, only if you're able to pay off the balance every month.

MyPoints

I just found this website where you can get points for shopping. I found it on another finance bloggers blog at www.howisavemoney.net Basically, anytime you shop or use a service you can earn points to get a gift certificates and gift cards. You can earn points at places you would normally be buying something from like Best Buy, Pottery Barn, Barnes & Noble etc. I highly suggest you sign up and use the service. Signing up is easy and its another way to get something back for something you would normally be doing. I am using it to make my purchases. Goto www.mypoints.com and check it out!

Updates

This year is all about financial responsibility. I've some what become a control freak over my expenses and I'm tracking everything. Last year was a financial nightmare so I'm on a mission to 1) establish a substantial savings account and 2) knockout debt. So far, Ive been setting aside a small out into a savings and making my monthly payments for credit cards.
I'm also cutting down expenses to the minimum, which is why I'm making sure I don't spend any money that I don't have. Most of my expenses will be going to rent, food, bills, and gas, and probably only $80/month on entetainment. The rest will be placed into my savings account.

Work is good
School is getting boring. The tests are based on the questions in the book, which already have the answeres, so I'm not as compelled to to study the material, but I'll be working on that by just reading the material.

Rule #5: Ask These Questions
This is sort of a follow-up to my rule about shopping. If I must go shopping and buy stuff, I try to remember to ask myself these questions, or at least some of them!

Do I need it?
How many do I already have?
How much will I use it?
How long will it last?
Could I borrow it from a friend or family member?
Can I do without it?
Am I able to clean, lubricate and/or maintain it myself?
Am I willing to?
Will I be able to repair it?
Have I researched it to get the best quality for the best price?
How will I dispose of it when I'm done using it?
Are the resources that went into it renewable or nonrenewable?
Is it made of recycled materials, and is it recyclable?
Is there anything that I already own that I could substitute for it?

I think I copied this list out of a book a while back, but I can't remember the source and couldn't find it online. If anyone knows who should be credited, please let me know. Not all of these questions relate directly to finances, e.g. things that are recyclable might actually be pricier, but it's a good guide to being a more responsible consumer in general.
